Have you recently purchased an iPhone? If you have you will be on one of O2’s iPhone tariffs which are not the best value for money, but do not fear your tariff is about to get a whole lot better value for money.

The iPhone is still only available on an 18 month contract and will still include unlimited data and free wi-fi in O2 hot spots, but O2 are releasing new tariffs on the 1st February that will include more minutes and messages for your monthly line rental.

The old £35 per month tariff included a measly 200 anytime cross network minutes and 200 text messages, the new £35 tariff will include 600 minutes and 500 text messages. That’s 400 extra minutes and 300 extra texts each month. The old £45 tariff included 600 anytime cross network minutes and 500 text messages, but the new £45 tariff includes 1200 anytime cross network minutes, and the text messages will stay the same at 500 per month. The old £55 tariff that gave you 1200 inclusive minutes and 500 text messages per month will be discontinued and be replaced with a £75 tariff that provides 3000 anytime cross network minutes and 500 text messages.

The good news for those of you who have purchased your iPhone on one of O2’s old tariffs is that your tariff will automatically change to the new tariffs anytime between the 7th February and mid-march. Old £35 tariff customers will change to the new £35 tariff, old £45 and £55 tariff customers will change to the new £45 tariff. If customers need more than 1200 minutes per month they will have to upgrade to the £75 tariff.

Although overall this is a good move by O2 it could cause some aggravated customers. If a customer is signed up to the old £45 tariff (600m + 500t) and is happy with the amount of minutes and text messages they have, they might want to down grade to the new £35 tariff which offers the same inclusive minutes and messages for £10 less per month. Networks usually don’t allow you to downgrade your contract until it is nearing an end, it will be interesting to see if they allow iPhone customers to do this due to the circumstances, and considering they are automatically dropping old £55 tariff customers down to the new £45 tariff.
