Last year, there were more sales for e-books than printed books. On March 5 this year, Barnes & Noble, the world’s largest chain of bookstores, acquired online e-book vendor, Fictionwise. President of BN, William J Linch said: “The market hasn’t been that developed to date. We think it’s a big growth area going forward.”

Many people like to purchase and read e-books and e-magazines through lightweight handheld readers today. Several companies have come up with innovative, standalone e-book readers, such as Amazon Kindle, Sony Reader, Hanlin eReader (aka Endless Ideas BeBook), etc; these thin elegant gadgets can take people back to the era of reading. Let’s have a look at some of these readers in this article.

E-books and E-magazines: How Do They Work?

E-books can be of two types: those which can be read on a computer and those which require special devices to read. There are several formats for e-books including Adobe PDF, Microsoft LIT, Palm PDB, etc. In order to buy an e-book, you go to the online vendor of the e-book, pay and register your reader for DRM (Digital Rights Management) protection, and download the e-book to the registered reader. Since only the registered e-book reader can read this e-book, the author and the publisher are protected from piracy. Digital copying is not possible with DRM protection.

In 2008, an Apple iPhone app for reading e-books in iPhone had a surge of sales (even more than the sales total of Amazon Kindle). This made iPhone one of the popular devices to read e-books. But in this article, we will be looking only at specialized e-book readers.

1. Amazon Kindle

Perhaps the most popular of e-book readers, Amazon Kindle had a sales total of 380,000 units in 2008 in the US alone. Kindle is now in the next generation with the advent of Amazon Kindle 2 and Kindle DX this year (DX is already out of stock). According to Digital Book Readers, K-DX offers native PDF support, has an iPhone-like accelerometer that changes the orientation of the screen when you rotate the Reader and is more suitable for reading electronic versions of newspapers, magazines, and formatted books. With the ability to keep thousands of e-books in storage and easy access to the online Amazon e-book store, Kindle is perhaps the first choice of anyone looking for a standalone e-book reader.

It can receive books through the high-speed Sprint 3G network, nationally available. 2. Sony Reader

Sony Digital Book Reader is the popular e-book reader from Sony, and there have been already three editions of this—PRS-500, PRS-505, and PRS-700.

The reader has a 600 x 800 pixel electronic paper display (EPD), similar to Kindle, and the display is 8-level grayscale. PRS-700 edition, unlike others, sports a touch screen. The supported e-book formats include BBeB book (from Marlin), TXT, RTF, ePub, Adobe PDF, Microsoft Word (DOC). It supports JPEG, GIF, PNG, and BMP for images; and MP3 and AAC for audio.

3. iRex iLiad

iRex iLiad, similar to Kindle and Sony Reader, makes use of the electronic paper display and comes at 768 x 1024 (8 inches) resolution. It has 16-level grayscale screen.

Through Wi-Fi, LAN, USB connectivity, or a network using a MyiRex account, you can transfer e-books to the reader. The supported e-book formats include Adobe PDF, MOBI, PRC, HTML, and TXT.

4. Hanlin eReader

Hanlin eReader, known in various brand names across the world, such as Endless Ideas BeBook, is a popular e-book reader. It has a 600 x 800 resolution, 4-level grayscale display. It connects through a USB port.

Unlike other readers mentioned above, this reader supports almost all popular file formats for e-books—Adobe PDF, CHM, DJVU, DOC, ePub, FB2, HTM, LIT, MOBI, PPT, PRC, RTF, TXT, WOLF. It also supports archiving formats like ZIP and RAR; image formats like BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, TIFF; and audio format, MP3.

Since they can connect to some network to purchase and download popular fiction and non-fiction from online e-book vendors, they can provide great reading experience when you are on a long-distance journey.

The mini iPhone clones are fast gaining popularity.  After all, popular phones are getting smaller and smaller.  Take a look at the the shrinking Blackberry Pearl or the sleeker, more streamlined iPhone 3G.  Many people would love to have the features of the larger smartphones, but don’t want to or can’t comfortably carry around the bulk and weight of the fuller sized models.  The new CECT KA08 will likely appeal to these folks because it’s put the popular, sought after features inside of a much smaller package. The Mini iphone KA08 Is About The Size Of A Credit Card: Many petite sliders and flip phones look absolutely monstrous next to the petite A08. The dimensions of this phone is only  86 X 47 X 10 mm. This phone only weighs 68 grams (in contrast to the i9′s 90 grams.)  This makes this phone the approximate size of a credit card.  I can’t imagine a single scenario where this phone would be bulky or would get in the way.  If size is your main criteria, you can’t go wrong here.

Cool Colors:  Another stand out of this phone is the huge availability of fashion colors.  Many iPhone clone models have recently come out with black, red, and white housing. The KA08 offers these colors too, but you can also get the phone in pink and blue.  This is color of the housing, not a skin or face plate.

Shake And Tilt, Dual Sim, Quad Band, And An Upgraded Camera: Mini iphone KA08 ncludes most of the standard features of the others.  It’s a quad band.  It supports two sim slots.  It has the motion sensor / shake control.  The camera is 2.0 mega pixels instead of 1.3.

It also has Bluetooth, WAP / GPRS, MP3 / MP4 players, FM radio, ebook reader, call photo ID, voice recognition, handwriting input, USB cord, memory card (up to 8GB), etc.

The one thing that most of these doesn’t support is Java.  If you want that, you’d probably be better off with the very popular CECT i9.  However, that one is more full sized at 110 x 60 x 11.5 mm. As you can see, the i9 is almost as sleek and slim, but it’s longer.  The KA has everything that the i9 has, other than a larger screen (2.6 inches as opposed to 3.2), the ability to text easily with big hands, and the Java support. 

You may not have heard about the Kindle when it first released. Compared to some technologies such as the iPhone and new versions of Windows, the Kindle was a fairly quiet release. If you are an avid reader, you were probably more than a little intrigued. But intrigue grew into popularity with the release of the much-improved Kindle 2. And now with the Kindle DX, the most advanced reader on the market, Amazon has become the single most popular maker of ebook readers.

But is all this popularity well-founded or is it just hype brought on by a new piece of technology? To be fair, it is a bit of both. The Kindle is far from a perfect device and it won’t be replacing the paper book just yet, but it does offer the best possible way to take your books, and lots of them, wherever you want to go. That portability is something you just cannot find with normal books. And even though the Kindle DX is big, roughly the dimensions of a sheet of paper but substantially thicker, it can bring over 3,000 books with it. You would need quite a backpack to carry a library that big with you.

The Kindle 2 may be the most popular ebook reader available, but it certainly isn’t the only one. The DX, however, is really the only one of its kind available. It offers a huge screen, more storage and some cool features such as a rotating screen like the iPhone. But it also makes a huge price jump from the Kindle 2.

The price of the Kindle DX is a whooping $489. This is probably why many people, even those who think highly of the Kindle and the ebook technology, are hesitant to get a Kindle DX. It doesn’t even come with any freebies like a bestseller or two, and since you would still need to purchase a good cover for it, your costs could extend well beyond the $500-mark. At the very least, couldn’t Amazon just have thrown in a cover into the package?

Since the Kindle is a fairly new device, it still hasn’t completely broken into the market. Although it is the most popular one, the Kindle still can’t offer its internet connection service outside the country. Once the Kindle is more established, this is likely to change. For now, many people just see it as a fancy way to read books. But it wasn’t so long ago that the iPod was just a fancy way to listen to music. Now, it is one of the most widely spread pieces of technology you can find. The Kindle remains revolutionary in what it offers. Eventually, it is hard to imagine that paper books will not be replaces. For now, it is still a luxury to many people, but as it discovers its territory in the marketplace, more and more homes will be losing the bookshelf and getting a Kindle.
