iPhone: Co-Pilot vs TomTom (September 2009)

Videos Add comments

So I was contacted a few weeks back by the creators of Co-Pilot and they gave me access (thank you) to their iPhone application (which has also recently been updated). My verdict on it is that its actually pretty amazing – I still find it hard to believe that they are charging such a cheap price for such a quality product – superior to the TomTom in my honest opinion. Hope you like the video icon wink iPhone: Co Pilot vs TomTom (September 2009) UPDATE: Co-Pilot got in touch with me after watching this review and they tell me significant advances in the UI are on their way, an update is in progress and should be available soon. In this video, I basically show you around and tell you why I think its better than the TomTom. 1. LOLDISNEYLAND Says:

@jgaryellison The vocal directions in my opinion are better than TomTom’s. Copilot is very much better value than tomtom if you are just buying the software for your phone.

  2. tommyboi9 Says:

do u need to buy a car kit with this?

  3. jb317able Says:

ive got both tom tom and co-pilot when i was using tom tom today the arrow tracker went right of the page what a bag of sxxt!!!ive got both for free and now im in the process of downloading co-pilot and by the looks and simplicity of co-pilot ,CO-PILOT WINS HANDS DOWN ,LIKE U SAY WHAT AN UNUSUALL OUTSTANDING PRICE!!!!!! KEEP UP THE GOOD GRAFT LOVE UR VIDEOS AND COMMENTS!!!!!

  4. canadamove Says:

I’m in the uk but have a trip to Canada planned for Monday 12th April
and wanted to know if I purchase co pilot north America maps from the AppStore for my iPhone and then if I use co pilot when in Canada will it only work with a data connection ?
I will be turning off my data roaming for my trip so don’t want to incur any charges for using sat nav
the reason I ask is the latest review on the AppStore says you need to use data when roaming
can you confirm for me if this is true???

  5. Byootox Says:

It works primarily via a GPS reciever in your phone or an external reciever if you choose to have one.
There is a an internet feature on it but you don’t have to use it.
This for version 7 at least.

  6. Byootox Says:

I have Co-Pilot 7 and you can definitely change the onscreen keyboard to a QWERTY setup so I’m susprised the newer version doesn’t have this abilty as well.
There is one or bits I didn’t see you go into but I don’t know if that’s because it’s a different version to me.

  7. Nocky321 Says:

Not sure if anyone else has discovered this in the latest update, but for some reason the app doesn’t remember my ‘at turn’ turn warning settings when starting or restarting the app. I have to go back in and uncheck and recheck the ‘at turn’ box for it to register the setting correctly. Does anyone else have this issue?

By the way im using an iphone 3G (latest os) and CoPilot Live 8 version 8.0.0.651 (UK).

I’ve reset, redownloaded and reinstalled and its still the same…

  8. Cduddy999 Says:

Hi Its £20 Per Year for the Live Services on copilot.

  9. DLH2901 Says:

    @taloto07 Yes.

  10. padmwe Says:

i dont kno bout on iphone, but on android based phone yes u can with co pilot..i have hero with co pilot live 8 on it

  11. taloto07 Says:

does it able to play music while navigating?

  12. benagro Says:

    Many thanks for this video!

An interesting question might be: what happen if you are driving and receive a phone call?
That is… after answering, are you able to go back to the navigation software, like Navigon does?
This might be very important if you are travelling and have to do a long phone call; it might be a shame if we have to choose between talking and driving (of course using a headset!).

Really thanks again for your nice work here

  13. Vitruviux Says:

    Thanks for the review!

Can you pinch-zoom on the map?

And I wonder whose maps are more detailed, for example Tomtom’s maps are terribly outdated for Ireland(Rep).

  14. theunits3 Says:

Gives vocal directions, like tomtom does.

  15. jgaryellison Says:

Question: Does it give vocal directions? Or do you have to always be looking at it to know when to turn?

  16. wahidw Says:

Dose it work without data plan or I need
    internet?

  17. kamz786ku Says:

can you use live services for free on the copilot ??

  18. 246davedude246 Says:

thx mate u saved me a lot of money

  19. Bomag Says:

If anybody is wondering the app has been updated quite a bit since this review and has actually solved some of the flaws pointed out here. The keyboard is your usual iphone keyboard now so it’s dead easy to type in addresses or postcodes.

  20. petedoc800 Says:

    yes

  21. nodecentusernames1 Says:

can you play music when on the app?

  22. criscusack Says:

Oh, a ROUNDABOUT in 50 yards. I could NOT figure out what that symbol was, but I guess in Scotland you go left around a traffic circle. Curious about the traffic, but otherwise, great review, thanks for saving me $75!

  23. PIZDONREGISTRACIJA2 Says:

if you do more reviews…. stop shaking things that your showing!! It kinda gives like a see sick to some people.
    Cheers!! :D

  24. LukeMadSkillz1984 Says:

Is there a 7 digit postcode search facility?

  25. Xenoxsis Says:

But tomtom is still more expensive, so its still a 3rd of the price.

  26. krzesla Says:

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

  33. Kristopher Tamburo Says:

With the world slowly moving to the much-dreaded energy crisis, it is important that we reduce our dependency on non-renewable sources of energy. Non-renewable sources being renewable are about to get extinct. Renewable energy solutions refer to those energy solutions that can keep churning energy without exhausting the resources. Three types of energy solutions fall into the category of renewable energy solutions: solar energy solutions, hydro energy solutions, and wind energy solutions. Anyways, you can read more about it here…

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

  60. Stepanie Spohnholz Says:

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  61. diet meals Says:

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

  81. frank kern video cribs Says:

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
