Yesterday I mentioned TextOnPhone, an eBook web app for the Apple to give you an idea of what it offers. I specifically did this demo in a “worst-case” scenario by using EDGE, ie; I shut my WiFi radio off on the of the experience, which overall, I think is very good. The application wisely caches ahead a number of pages so that you really don’t need to wait for pages to load. There are some basic user customization settings and some excellent eBook reading lists and I’m very impressed that the app remembers where you left off in a book. Overall, I was pretty impressed in the short time I’ve used TextOnPhone.

You did a really great job of illustrating the application’s experience in this video. You even clicked on all the things that I was thinking “Oh what’s that?” as you were working through the screens. I’m definitely checking this app out now!
BTW, it’s common for editors and people who work with print (or even web) typesetting to use some boilerplate Latin text to demonstrate the way a font looks or the appearance of a type style. It’s just really neutral.

I’ve just begun learning textonphone, and I found this video very useful. Some “How To” videos are just too slick for their own (our our own) good: they move along too fast and remove too many bumps along the way to give a real sense of the real user experience of the program. Nice job KevinCTofel!

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)
